Jackson St. Underpass
Client: Interim Community Development Association with the International District Community
Working pro bono with the Interim CDA and the International District community, Site Workshop is developing a concept design for the I-5 freeway underpass at Jackson and King Streets. The surrounding area is rich in culture and embedded with a dynamic history, but the underpass bisecting the neighborhood is perceived as dangerous.
The community wants to transform these spaces into active, safe, and welcoming environments, so we are in the process of generating ideas that ask "what if?" The community has identified some potential program for the underpass including a sport court, skate-park, performance space, play elements, an off-leash dog area and community art. One playful concept to get ideas rolling is to build a giant Buddha sculpture next to I-5, similar to the locally-famous Fremont Troll.
